Content filtering

Why does The Cloud filter content?

We want to make sure content is suitable for everyone. That’s why we introduced family-friendly filters across our network. It automatically filters unsavoury content by default, however some hotspot partners may choose to loosen restrictions.

Can I check why something is blocked?

You can check why something is blocked with Sonic Wall: CFS URL Rating Review Service.

A site has been categorised incorrectly. Can I get it unblocked?

Our content filtering system is provided by Sonic Wall who categorise sites automatically. You can ask them to reassess a site’s categorisation here if you think it’s incorrect.

Please note, some site categories are blocked by default: violence, hate and racism, pornography, illegal drugs, hacking and proxy avoidance, criminal and illegal skills and nudity.

What happens if I try to access blocked content?

A message will appear telling you it’s not accessible. Please note, we have no control over content accessed via 3G or other available networks.

Public WiFi risks

Our public WiFi hotspots give open network access for all. This offers simple and easy connectivity for as many devices as possible.

When you register or log on to The Cloud network, your data becomes encrypted. However, if a device or application you are using does not encrypt the data it’s sending, there’s a risk someone could intercept these signals.

For added security we recommend using a VPN client, such a F-Secure. It encrypts all traffic passing from the device onto the web and can be downloaded below.

To ensure you’re always connecting to a legitimate Cloud hotspot, look for one of the following networks: 'WiFi Zone – The Cloud' or '_The Cloud'. Alternatively you can download our app and connect through there.

Top tips for keeping safe online

Any unsecured device without antivirus software, firewall or VPN may be vulnerable when connecting to a public network. These simple steps will help keep your devices and your personal data safe and secure.

Internet Security

  • Make sure your device has up-to-date antivirus or security software
  • Always install the latest software and applications updates
  • Set-up accounts for each family member and use appropriate parental controls
  • Only download apps from official app stores (Google Play/Apple App Store)

  • Use different passwords for each website you login to
  • Create passwords using a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols
  • Make sure to logout of any accounts when you’re finished
  • Ensure your device is password protected
  • Always lock your phone, tablet and PC when not in use

  • Don’t open an email from someone you don’t know
  • Don’t give out personal or financial details
  • Call the company directly if you want to check if an email is legitimate
  • Remember your bank will never ask you for your password or PIN

Banking or Shopping

  • Use internet security software to stop you being redirected to fake sites
  • Look for the padlock icon at the top before entering personal details
  • Look for web addresses starting with ‘https’ – the ‘s’ means the page is secure
  • Shop sensibly – check reviews of sites you’re unfamiliar with
  • Be careful not to leave credit card details exposed on-screen

Facebook and other networking sites

  • Always keep your social media profiles private
  • Think before you post. Friends can share whatever you post with the world
  • Only connect with friends you know personally
  • Never trade personal information or pictures with people you don’t know

Use WiFi responsibly

Please avoid illegal or illicit content or from doing anything inappropriate that could threaten the network’s integrity. We’re really not keen on spamming, privacy infringements or things like that either!
